How to dye leather with airbrush?

tiñe con aerografo

Today we are going to do a professional dyeing technique. We are going to give a different and professional touch to your leather products.

Our aim with this tutorial is that you learn how to do an airbrush dyeing in a very simple way and that gives very good results.

Necessary materials

Many types of airbrushes can be used, but in this case we use one of the most basic ones (it can cost between 30 and 40 euros approximately).

Steps to dye leather with an airbrush

  • The first thing to do is to pour the leather dye directly into the airbrush with the eyedropper and simply check that it works as it should.

  • After this we start to dye the leather keeping the same pressure during the whole time and do not press too much, as little dye has to come out. This can be done with different tones, usually darker at the edges and less dark in the centre or apply more dye at the edges and blend it so that there is less dye in the centre.
  • At the beginning it is advisable to make longer strokes, especially at the edges to give uniformity.

  • Then we polish the central part making the gradient. (Remember that when it dries after dyeing, the colour loses a little bit of intensity, it always becomes a little bit lighter.)
  • To finish we have to apply a layer of finisher that in this case we will apply a neutral resolene of the brand Fiebing's, it looks very good, as it is not very shiny.

To apply the finisher we have to take a sponge and wet it in water and wring it out and then we do the same with the dye, we apply the sponge as many times as necessary to leave it in the layer of colour we want.

In conclusion:

As you can see, the technique for dyeing leather with an airbrush is easy to apply and also requires materials that are not difficult to obtain.

It is a simple technique, if you do it several times you will master the technique and you will get very homogeneous colours. This technique can also be done in other ways without an airbrush, but it is much better with an airbrush and the transitions are much higher.
